Yet again my apologies for not being present in the galleries recently. This is a very busy time of year for me, and probably won't ease up any time soon. I will manage to catch up with the galleries (eventually). Promise! I just hope that this is okay with my friends here at R'osity.
This pic is of my best friend Iain, visiting home from Canada where he now lives. Climbing at Almscliff Crag, North Yorkshire in June.
I decided to create a collage rather than put up a series of shots that to anyone other than a climber would look like the same shot! This is boulder climbing, done usually at a lower height without the use of safety gear (no ropes!) and even though it is at a lower height there are still many dangers. (I still have to see a chiropractor every two months after getting trapped nerves in my shoulder and back from a bouldering fall and subsequant deck-out nearly two years ago. Such is our sport!) Bouldering is used as practise as it is technically very difficult climbing, but is actually a sport in it's own right.
"Bouldering is for me a crystallisation of all the things I like about climbing.
The ability to focus totally on climbing rock, moving how it dictates taking you where it wants, how it wants you to get there, with the minimum of paraphernalia and distractions.
Some people will never understand how such small semingly insignificant pieces of rock could have such an allure, play such an important role in anybody's life. There is no glorification of danger, no financial or social incentives, yet this is where you will find the cutting edge of our sport. In the dead of winter high on some lonely moor shrouded in mist, down a hidden canyon deep in the desert or on a tiny cliff amongst the urban sprawl of some polluted city. No, some people will never understand, but once you have discovered the freedom, purity and satisfaction of bouldering you may be hooked forever." - Alan Cameron-Duff. Author of "Yorkshire Gritstone Bouldering".
Thanks for looking!

Well like you Carl, I haven't been around the galleries much recently either but have no valid reason (just lack of enthusiasm!!) but your absence just leaves me wanting more of this great photography!! I love the collage, it creates a wonderful "feeling" especially combined with the descriptive commentary. I think it is great the way you have chosen the lovely Yorkshire scenery as a backdrop to the main subjects - the colours and contours of the fields are amazing. This really gives me a buzz reading and looking at this - I think I will definitely have to take up climbing now..... know a good instructor??? Great capture(s) Carl. Hugs. Chrissy xox

What a wonderful collection of images you have put together here. Looks like hard work to me!! But it must be very satisfying once you reach the top and see all the wonderful views that North Yorkshire has to offer. A great collage Carl!!

This is not only a really nice collage, but it is very much enhanced by your wonderful narrative. I had never heard of bouldering before and perhaps it's a good job you can't see my face, as I am sitting here simply gob-smacked!
