Description

This was written after spending one evening watching TV and listening to the radio and being bombarded with messages from the cult of image that rules the media. This is my response. The media treats people like objects more that it did even just a few years ago: you can't go anywhere without this "in your face" sexuality and constant nagging to conform with a small set of predefined ideas hammering down at you. Does anyone think you have more credibility if you're in a skin-tight rubber cat suit or a dress slit down to you naval? And this mess is not just directed at women either, men get hit with messages defining them by what they should look like just like women do, but with women it's much worse and constant and painfully obvious. I have nothing against beauty or sex or the human body, either gender, but I do have something against physical attributes being used as a weapon and a manipulation tool. We are more than just the package, despite what anyone says. The point? Think. That's all, just think. The media machine counts on the fact that you aren't thinking, that they can tell you anything and you'll believe it. Because if this is all there is to life, we have a very sorry existence indeed. Gads, I am tired. -Mea

Amen!!! Preach on Mea, preach on! I could ramble forever in accord on this subject. Suffice it to say after spending a year or so as a fashion model I learned what it felt like to be a package of hamburger meat. Rock on sister.

Well Mea - I couldn't agree more with you, and I've been saying the same thing for years now, and as each year passes - it gets worse and worse. These days, hardly a product is advertised without underlying sexual overtones, and as you pointed out, the lies are fabricated against both genders. We're all booked into separate categories, governed by age by the media monsters. When was the last time you saw ads aimed at the 30 to 50's generation that heralded a great time? No, rather that generation gets advertised to death about adequate life insurance, prescription drugs, vitamins, retirement plans and the list goes on. The young can only be a part of the in-crowd if they drink this, chew that, wear these, eat here, party there. I have grown to hate TV commercials and find more joy watching the spin cycle on my washing machine - using brand X soap, because I'm not in the in. Great rant Mea, loved every word!

My s/o and I went to our local Home Show this past weekend, and because he's in the market for a hot tub, we wound up going to a lot of hot tub dealers. And the riotous thing is that they all, to a man, adverised their wares in exactly the same way: with a 50-60ish couple and usually the guy in gym gear, doing his damndest to keep that hard body he lost twenty years ago. Getting close to that age group myself, I looked at all this as marketing genius when it came to manipulation: "Buy a hot tub! You'll be young! You'll be fit! You'll be hot!" It looks like the era of Logan's Run may be closer than we really want to admit.....

Powerful beyond almost everything I've seen! I love it! If I didn't think about if before (i'm pretty sure i did), I'm thinking right now. You've won't get an 'amen' or a 'hallelujah' from me, just a good old GOOD JOB!

Packaged sexuality, don't you just love it? It's almost enough to make me Straightedge. Almost. Great rant, which works because there's a lot of the truth in there.

When I met my wife (Then girlfriend) she was a sexy little thing! And I knew some of my friends thought she was fat, but I told them to STFU. I have never bought into the corpse-like model types that the media crams our eye sockets with. In fact, despite being (Perhaps more because?) a media student, I hate that part of the media. It wasn't until much later, when Wendy and I had truly fallen in love, that she shared her dark secret with me. She had suffered for years with Anorexia (Bulimia). I could have cried when I listened to her story, how her life was turned upside down. Now when I sense that someone percieves her as fat, I just want to smack them, not out of some macho "She's my woman" thing (Though there is always some of that) but because there are so many idiots out there that just DON't GET IT! Unfortunately we are biological entities driven by the desire to procreate, so sex IS everything. And as long as the media controls it, and male consumers demand it, it will not change. Woman have the power, the power to boycott merchants, that's where the real power lies! However, as long as there are 10-28 year old girls/women who will wedge into those leather pants...there is not much chance. Excellent piece!!! And it is clear by all the wonderful insightful comments, you have struck a chord! you are not alone!
