Description

This is the Bolts down Bay. I have an older shot in my gallery. I revisited this place to get what I consider a better shot. I thank you all so much for encouraging me to post more in this series. I will give you a little history of this tiny houses and narrow alleyways in Bay. In the 18th century Robin Hood's Bay was considered the busiest smuggling community on the North Yorkshire Coast. It was said that a bale of silk or a keg of brandy could pass from the bottom of the village to the top of the village without leaving the houses. A series of cellars, hiding places and bolt holes we used to pass contraband goods from house to house. Fisherfolk, farmers, the clergy and the gentry were all involed in the smuggling!! Today, sadly most of these beautiful houses are holiday cottages. Thank you for reading and looking. Hugs. Diane.

Oh how scandalous! It makes life so much more interesting when there are sordid stories in the history of where you live. :-) I think the modern reality is a very beautiful one indeed and your photos are doing a marvelous job of sharing it with us. :-)

The Bay is so old it's strange with all it's nooks and grannies. I have seen so little of it. The top bit near where you live and the bottom near the beach. The middle bit looks very interesting. Next time I want to have a really good look round.

I hunted down another view of The Bolts, and I think it is as wonderful as this one, just different lighting, and I think taken from a little further in. I really like both photos! Both invite the viewer in, make the viewer wish he/she were there to explore further. What a wonderful place your village is!
