I am an American baby boomer with varied interests and I consider myself to be a new-comer to photography, especially digital photography. Since getting my Nikon 7900 in '04, I have become rather interested in capturing wildflower and small critter close-up images: thus most of my postings are of those subjects, but occasionally I do find other things that either interest me or I just feel compelled to share, lol. I use a point and shoot Nikon 7900 coolpix digital camera and I am usually within a few inches of my subjects. I seldom use a tripod. My camera has very few manual adjustments so most of the time I have it set to "macro" mode. With this setting, I get a 7.8mm lens with an f stop of 4.8 and aperture speed of around 1/50-1/100 of a sec. I do my digital editing using Paint Shop Pro XI as the primary program with some usage of a few specialized features in Photoshop 7. I appreciate all comments but I ESPECIALLY like those that give honest critiques. Update: I bought a Nikon D40X with 2 Nikon AF-S VR lens (18-55mm and 55-200mm) at the end of 2008 but did not have free time to play with it until May 2009. It is a steep learning curve to go from point and shoot to DSLR, especially if one knows nothing about photography beyond - turn it on - then point and shoot, lol.
Update #2 - Aug 2013: I bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC - Lx7 because the Coolpix 7900 is on it's last legs. BIO I am a 60ish single man with a diverse background of employment. Among other things, at one time or another, I have been an engineering draftsman, a union carpenter, a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stagehands union, a stained glass pattern maker, a ranch hand, a lifeguard, and a member of the USAF for almost 8 years. I have been retired for over 20 years because of a back injury and now spend my time enjoying my 25 acres of Northeast Texas Woodland. I have been building a house for the past 10 years and may even finish it eventually, lol. Thanks to all who have taken the time to comment on my postings and I hope everyone (who has clicked on one of them) enjoyed the image. Lee

Such drama! :-) Life and death played out right here for us to see. Love it! I too have trouble letting nature handle things without my help. But doing so is the right thing. Your pov and detail here is magnificent.

Excellent action! Here in south Africa I have encountered many of these spiders and they are quite frightning..can only imagine what a sight of terror they must be to a poor insect.

Excellent! I like to watch those spiders when they are around. I haven't seen one here in a while. A GREAT photo!!!

Fabulous image even though it makes me cringe. Very well shot. That spider looks huge and VERY scary!

Gorgeous shot and focus but feel bad for the once beautiful dragonfly.

I hadn't seen those spiders before until this summer. My best friend (who lives right across the street) has a web with 3 huge ones in the corner of her back yard. Then I discovered (rather unpleasantly) while mowing my yard that I have one of them on the side of my house. It scares the hell out of me! lol! I had a big half circle patch of grass that didn't get mowed because I made sure to stay far, far away from that web. lol! I have been trying to work up the courage to go and get some shots of it, but I'm not sure that will happen! :P

Fantastic shot Lee, I too feel sad for the Dragonfly but that is the way with nature. Great pattern on the spider. Strange how six of the legs have a light colour at the top and the two front ones don't.

Amazing catch! Mullaney found one last year, she had an egg bulb spun on a branch. The whole thing had come down in a storm. The "cold hearted" Mom stayed right with the egg bulb. Her Papa put the whole thing in a plastic case and they checked every morning until the eggs hatched. She didn't eat anything for around a week unless it stepped in her mouth, just guarded those babies. After the hatching the whole clan was released in the backyard. Everytime she sees a spider Mullaney says "Good Morning"

but the dragonfly understands his death

You are just like me; only I interfere more than I should. :) Awesome and very impressive shot here Lee... so very clear ... was this done hand-held? Love it...

Yes, the balance of nature. Great minds think alike I guess. ;'] Exquisite detail!

A fantastic and timely capture (for you I mean!) shame about the dragonfly though - I would definitely be in his corner for this battle if I was there. Great POV and details shown here. xx

Wow, this picture gives me the shivers.

Nice crisp shot of this murder scene!...usually the spider webs are no match for the strength of the dragonflies in my area. This must be quite a large spider!
