Description

The two boys sat down and stared at the door, both pondering what to do next. What seemed like hours had passed before the first boy spoke up. -----“What do you think actually happened to that lizard?” “Wasn’t it obvious? It aged all the way to dust right before our eyes. Why, what do you think happened to it?” -----“Well, that’s what I was thinking. I just wanted to make sure we both agreed on that before I make a suggestion.” “What kind of suggestion? If you want to take turns knocking on that door to see what happens…you go first.” -----“Nothing like that…” The first boy picked something out of his shoe tread. “I say we break up the door.” “You mean break down the door…where did you learn English?” -----“No, I mean break up the door.” The first boy held up a small twig with an acorn stuck to it. “It was stuck in my shoe.” It dawned on the second boy. “Oh! Well, if you think it’ll work, let’s try it.” The first boy leaned down with his head right against the floor. He looked at the small opening right under the threshold. Slowly he scooted the acorn on the end of the stick forward until it wedged itself between the floor and the door…then with an odd splintering noise the door shattered as an oak tree shot up. As soon as no more door was touching the tree (due to being split into pieces), it stopped growing…but not before it was almost four feet around. “Alright, that was a great idea…now, how are we supposed to fit ourselves through the inch that’s left on either side?” -----“Hey, I got the door out of the way; it’s your turn now.” The second boy looked at the first and shook his head. “Damn it! Be ready to catch me, you know I’m gonna need some rest after this…” -----“Don’t do it! We can work around this…” But it was too late; the second boy had walked up to the tree, placed both hands on it and touched his head to it.
