The Semois river in Tintigny !
Rivière du sud de la Belgique, la Semois prend sa source à Arlon (413m) et se jette dans la Meuse en France, à Monthermé (140 m). Si à peine 100 kilomètres séparent ces deux villes, la Semois met 210 km à les relier. C’est dire si elle est sinueuse ! Ces tergiversations et hésitations ont donné lieu à une vallée empreinte d’une beauté subtile. C’est sans doute ce qui a amené l’écrivain belge Adrien de Prémorel (1889-1968) à appeler la Semois « la plus femme de nos rivières »…
De Arlon à Chiny, la Semois traverse la Lorraine belge: un ruisseau dans une plaine de prairies et de cultures. A partir de Chiny et jusque Sainte-Cécile, la rivière hésite entre la Gaume et le massif ardennais, ce qui donne une splendide alternance entre les paysages vallonnés et boisés typiques de l’Ardenne, et le décor plus paisible de la Gaume. C’est à partir de Herbeumont que la Semois choisit définitivement l’Ardenne. En aval de Bohan, elle quitte la Belgique (et l’Ardenne) pour s’engager en France (Les Ardennes). L’orthographe de son nom change aussi : Semois devient Semoy.
