Description
Montezuma Oropendolas (Psarocolius montezuma) at the great Classic Maya site of Tikal, in the Peten region of Guatemala. I suspect that these splendid birds, with their inimitable calls, look and sound much more exotic to an Old Worlder like me than they should. In reality, they have a wide range, are common within it and don't seem remotely shy around humans. The tree on which these two and quite a few other pairs had hung their nests was right in the middle of the Main Plaza of Tikal, the historically sacred space between Temples I and II, probably the single most-frequented location in the country's premier tourist attraction.
