Description

According to Hesiod, the evils of all men were shut up in a storage jar buried in the ground. Hesiod tells the story: Pandora, the first woman in Greek myth, was created as a punishment to mankind. Her name means "she to whom all gifts were given" - the goddess Aphrodite gave her beauty, Athene her skill Apollo her musical talent and a gift for healing, Demeter taught her to tend to a garden, Poseidon gave her a pearl necklace and the ability to never drown, Hera gave her curiosity, Hermes gave her cunning, boldness, and charm. Zeus wanted to punish mankind for Prometheus' theft of fire - he decided to give them a "beautiful evil to pay for fire". Hephaestus made the woman out of earth and water, to look like a goddess. She is sent as a bride to Epimetheus, stupid brother of the smart Prometheus, although he'd been warned not to take any gifts from the gods. Until then, mankind lived life in a paradise without worry. Epimetheus told Pandora never to open the jar she had received from Zeus. However, Pandora's curiosity got the better of her and she opened it, releasing all the evils, diseases and misfortunes of mankind to spread all over the world. Only "Hope" was left in the jar.
