These blooms always fascinate me. They have a magical form about them. There is a marvelous story about a unit of revolutionary soldiers who stopped in a town struggling with hunger (could have been Jamestown). The people there had no food to give the them being hardly able to feed themselves. The soldiers had been marching for days and had little food during their walk so they decided the only way to feed themselves was to make a thin stew. The soldiers searched for anything to put in the pot and one soldier found the seed pods of the datura and thought they were edible so he picked some and tossed them in the pot not knowing they were toxic. Reports for the next 3 days say the soldiers acted like they were intoxicated, they danced jigs in the street, they wandered around naked and they acted in a most peculiar manner. Some had to be restrained. All survived but probably wished they hadn't since they were made famous by they unusual behavior. :-) Wonderful capture of this flower btw. :-)
