Description

Found this old caboose sitting beside some rusted tracks several miles outside of town. I shot it just before sunset to bring out the warm tones, used F/5.6 to keep the entire car in focus, and employed an ND filter to increase DOF. He looked lonely sitting there like that, so I decided to keep him company for a while by exploring around and inside. I named him Rusty (man, I'm creative...) and assured him I would bring his plight to the attention of the world by posting his portrait on RR. [Yes, I intended the double entendre. ;) ]

So strange to see this old caboose sitting off the tracks. Great image and commentary. :)

Your POV almost gives this a feel of "model railway" - excellent! And the warm tones and colours are beautiful and create a wonderful tranquil mood. A lovely "portrait" of Rusty. xx

Very nice shot. I think they took him off of the tracks so no one would steal it haha.

There's an old movie named Harold and Maude. Maude lived in the coolest old train car- this reminds me of her "house". Very nice shot and title!

Why is it the caboose is always thought of so fondly? But when you see this you want to run to it, touch it, explore it, cherish it and some would want to refurbish it. Had this been a coal car or a flat bed or even a box car, interest would have been very little and it would have little appeal unless it had some creative grafiti on its sides. Love this shot...I'm as bad as most. I love the caboose.

Thanks for sharing this view into the past. It would be interesting to know if the CSX railroad would sell this or give it away to a local historical society. Many railroad communities would love to have something like this to put next to their old railroad depot, fix up and display for all to see. Some retired rail buffs would love to work on restoring this forgotten gem. More please!

I've seem them just cast aside and it's so sad. There are many who would refurbish it loveingly and give it a good home. There is an amazing sky there.

I believe you've finally gone completely off the rails, my dear! Fortunately, we here on the RR RR don't mind that at all. Excellent image - the light is perfect.

very interesting... you spend some times looking at it and wondering... the blur in the background helps the doubt that the train could be a little model for a while... compliments! :)

this somehow looks miniature in size. Interesting POV; beautiful shot and quality... Love all the contrasts! And that was sweet of you to keep it company like that .. :)

Very nice image. Old cabooses are the things of lore now a days. Slowly rusting away like the memories of their hey days.
