Description

In 1944 a German Submarine type VII is heading out for the Atlantic Ocean but picks up an unknown echo on the sonar. When closing in the crew of U99 encounters a strange metallic vessel floating just beneath the surface.... I created this image for the "Ship" challenge but missed the deadline with 2-3 days. Anyway, here it is. The scene is lit using one omni and two spots. The oceans surface is a simple terrain object with a "banji" shader and some cloud reflection added. The "holes" on the deck and on the side of the body are created using an alpha map an a bump map (to bend the edges inwards). "Work in progress" images and the mesh can be viewed here: http://www.colacola.se/wip_uboot.htm Hope you like it!

I agree, it's a shame you missed your deadline, this is surely a contender in any competition.

Great model (as usual) The waves look too big IMO which makes the sub look like a model. The POV also makes it look like a model.

UFOs and WW2... Two good ingredients for a good story! ;)

The sub looks fantastic. I have to agree on the water though, it makes the sub look like a toy. Great job though.

Thank you so much for explaining that ship just under the surface... Your models and texturing are amazing! This is just shy of looking like a photograph. I think they only thing giving it away is the U-boat. it is just a tiny bit too clean and dry looking. The water is amazing! That looks completely real. +++++

I like a good submarine tale as much as any. I just don't expect to be reading any good new ones. They are like tailfins on 50's cars now. SSBN is like castles.
