A recurring character from “the Table of Five”, a Dungeons & Dragons campaign set in the Silver Marches of the Forgotten Realms. ““This was all because of me!” Kara raged. “You did all of this, because he refused you my hand!?! It wouldn’t have mattered! I’d lie with every orc in the ‘Hills, before I’d let you touch me!” If her blind furry hadn’t clouded her concentration, she would have hurled a fireball spell at the cleric of Tempus and blasted him were he stood. “Enough!” Igan commanded. He shared Kara’s out-rage, but he feared what retribution might fall on them if they struck down the cleric, and he knew she could with a single spell. “You would not dare to harm me,” the cleric announced smugly. “I am favored by Tempus, and these serve HIM over YOU!” he cast his arms about to indicate the settlement’s few remaining warriors. “We shall see,” Igan rose to his feet, unaided for the first time in months, and his hand sought the hilt of his sword… but it was not there. “Let us see just how favored you are. Cast him out with nothing but the robes on his back!” he commanded. For an instant the horrifying thought that the cleric might be right and the warriors would defy Igan’s command, crossed Kara’s mind. Then the men moved, like a crashing wave, swarming the cleric and dragging him, screaming curses in Tempus’ name, from the chamber. Kara turned to the strangers. “We owe you a debt of gratitude!” she announced sincerely, her smile seeming to dispel the gloom like the sun burning through winter clouds.” The “niece” of Igan Starag, a retired captain of the Zhent army who established Winter Edge, Kara is seen by most of settlers there as the lady of the hold. Proud, strong willed and a true believer that Igan and his followers have broken all ties with the Black Network, she is a talented wizard, and the most powerful arcane spell caster in the settlement, but holds little authority or influence other then subtly nudging her “uncle”. Although raised as Igan’s niece, his closest friends know the truth, that he slaughtered Kara’s parents during one of his earliest campaigns in the Zhent army but could not bring himself to butcher an infant, so he secretly took her back to Zhentil Keep, a secret they have sworn to keep on threat of death. When Igan fell under a seeming incurable “mindfire” sickness, Kara tried to oppose the settlement’s cleric of Tempus who took control of Winter Edge and lead many of its warriors to their deaths in pointless attacks again the orcs of the Frost Hills. The arrival of the Table of Five, and Faeryl’s remove disease spell, ended his reign and restored Igan to authority, but left the settlement severely weakened, and facing retaliation from the orcs.
