Description

Ranging over the prairies in countless numbers, the buffalo provided the Plains Tribes not only with food but also clothing, utensils and shelter. The Indians knew that if the buffalo did not come this year, there were bad days ahead....the tribe would be hungry and cold ...Religion was integrated in all aspects of the daily life of the Plains Indians. They view their very existence as depending upon the willingness of the Great Spirit to bless and guide their endeavours. Prayers were offered to various heavenly bodies, animals, birds and rocks, in the belief that the Great Spirit would communicate through them. In the vast stillness of a Montana landscape, a Sioux warrior stands in the center of a sacred medicine ring full of rocks and skulls, hidden by the tall prairie grass. He prays to the Great Mystery in the hope that the buffalo will be plentiful for his people...

In colonial times... buffalo could be found as far east as the Appalachia Mtns... world changed - not for the better... Like your painting - and what it symbolizes.
