Description

This is the watercolor version of a CG image I did a little while ago: thumb_1480978.jpg The background information is basically the same: I have been thinking about the boundaries between the inside and the outside. This included aspects like indoors and outdoors, home versus workplace but mainly inside and outside of myself. Is it possible to let feelings out? would uncovering them allow external light to filter in, or would it make the outside invade, the skies to cave in? The name is inspired by a phrase from Peter Gabriel's song "Mercy Street": "Wear your inside out, dreaming of mercy" And by a quote from the end of the movie "Everything is illuminated": "Everything is illuminated in the light of the past. It is always along the side of us, on the inside, looking out." The image was painted on 140lb Arches watercolor paper with Winsor-Newton paints and some pen&ink. The size of the painting is 14x21". Although the WC is based on the CG image, there are several differences - the back "wall" was changed completely, there is a window in the side "wall/sky", the colors and pattern on the floor and cloth were changed. The painting on the cylinder is now a pen&ink drawing. Any comments, technical, artistic, philosophical - all welcome. You could compare the two images or just comment on this image. If you dont know a lot (or at all) about Watercolors, please dont let it deter you from leaving a comment - just say how it affected you, what if anything you like/dislike, does it show what I stated I want to show, what does it make you think/feel... You could also leave a comment in the critique club thread: "Thread" Thanks very much

I think it's pretty darn amazing what you can do with water colors. I have no idea how you manage some of the little details in there - you are obviously very skilled. The flowers and clouds on the back wall are what really catches my eye - It's hard for me to get a feeling from this type of art. contemplative - inadequete - interested...my best effort at verbalizing it. You've been a hard working lady these days :)

wow, did i interpret this picture incorrectly. looking at the original, i see that the picture is surrounded by drapery (and i remember seeing it now). looking at the image, i thought it was a skin suspended in front of a table. right now it looks (to my crazy eyes) like there's an undefined, misty landscape with houses and mountains in the background, with a tiled floor in the foreground. the scene itself looks inside out. i like the light beams from the window. i love how the face is peaking through, and i think the executing it in a different medium works well. it brings attention to the semi-hidden identity, and sets it apart from the environment. the spikes are an interesting element; i'm not sure what to make of them yet. they definitely add menace, possibly pain and a sense of being trapped. the image seems a lot more subtle and ambiguous to me than the relationship pictures. since the face is partially shadowed, but peaking out, i definitely feel the tension between inside and out, hidden and revealed. and, by the way, i really like it. i feel like the prevalence of the tiled floor in your works makes its meaning important, but i haven't even begun to decipher it yet.

Okay ... this is great!!! I love what you are doing with watercolors. the message is clear and well thought out. I love that. The color balance of complementary (blue and orange ... a common motif in your work I see) brings out the subtleties without saturating the delicacy of the color. Finally ... the composition is unusual ... but it works. I wished more people on the site could appreciate such good art work such as yours.
