Description

I apologize for my meager camera, but this bird was sitting next to our fishpond, and let me get to within 5 feet or so of it, but I have no idea what the devil it is! The face is very striking, but the most amazing thing is the sharp red-to-yellow color gradient on the tips of his tail feathers. I have a suspicion it's a predatory bird, but no idea what kind. Any suggestions?

Looks a bit like a titmouse. Found this link http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/817/_/Bridled_Titmouse.aspx. Hope that helps. BTW great captures and collage. It's a really cute bird!

I looked through my books and then did a google search and looked at the images tab. It looks to me like it may be a juvenile cedar waxwing or perhaps a bohemian waxwing. Not knowing where you live, it's hard to say. They eat insects and berries, but shouldn't be a threat to your fish. Try a google or yahoo search in your area, and click on the images tab. Nice lush growth on your pond, btw. :)

i agree about a juvenile waxwing, from the face and the distinctive colours coming out in the tail. see a nice adult here: http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1386776 looks like you have them nesting very close by. if you have anything with berries on it, you may see them feeding, especially when the weather gets colder.
