Description
USS Shenandoah ZR-1 approaches the airship tender USS Patoka AO-9 in 1924. The tender carried tanks of helium to refill and “refuel” Navy airships, the 125 ft. mooring mast had a dynamic socket at the top to receive the bow line from the airship. The tender program was suspended in 1933 after the loss of ZRS-4 Akron.

and was demolished by a storm...seen the pictures. The blimp returns, they're radar pickets now, but the dream lives. Great pic.
