Something so massive and institutional evokes the thought that it evolved from the winding down of a war, whether won or lost. There could have just been an upwelling of the human spirit that led a major force of artisans to assemble under a master architect to throw it up in the decades of feeling. Even now it is remarkable how the efforts to maintain it are consistent and successful.
