Description
Jutting out into the estuary of the river Tay, to the east of Dundee in what is now an up-market town of Broughty Ferry, Broughty Castle started as a 15th century keep, built by the Grays in the 1490s. During the "Rough Wooing" of Mary Queen of Scots, set off by King Henry VIII, the castle was handed over to the English but was recovered (with French help) by the Scots.
The castle was enlarged in the 19th century, with the outer wings being built at this time as gun emplacements.
The castle is now an extension of Dundee Museum and acts as a museum of whaling, fishing, arms and armour.
Note also the large sundial built onto the end of the harbour wall.
