Description

This statue of General Robert E. Lee in repose was to have been his sarcophagus, but he died in 1870 before it was completed. He is buried along with several members of his family beneath the Lee Chapel, on the grounds of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. An alcove was built behind the pulpit area of the chapel, which Lee had built during his tenure as president of then Washington University after the Civil War to showcase this stature. His famous war horse Traveler, is buried just outside the church, a few feet from where Lee lies at rest. Thanks very much for your views and comments.

A wonderful historical sight. I often wonder what our country would be like now if the South had won.
