Description

Something fun and very rare… I have been living on the family property (ranch for our US and Canadian Renderosity members) for 18 years. In that time, we have often seen the diggings of echidnas but only on two occasions have we seen a single individual during the day. The echidna is one of the world's only monotremes, or egg-laying mammals, the other being the platypus. The other night, my wife said “Come quickly and look at this!” There was a family of five, two adults and 3 juveniles digging up large honey ants in our garden. We videoed them with night shot setting and I took a couple of photos of them in our garden. They were really fat and healthy which make us delighted at the environment around our homestead. We have planted a lot of native trees and scrubs about the 3 acres of our house paddock and often see a lot of native birds and wallabies in this area. It proves that you can have a working sheep and broadacre farm and still support the native wildlife. I am still stunned at seeing a family group of echidnas. This is extremely unusual as echidnas generally are nocturnal and only generally seen as single individuals. Every one I have spoken to about this, won’t believe it until they see the photos and then proceed to tell me that echidnas don’t forage as family groups.
