Description

This is actually 4 different shots stitched together. Leaving my drivway and turning right yo wind up at Peggy's Cove (see earlier posts) if you turn left you can go to the mouth of the harbour (about a 15 minute drive from here). This is the old fortress of York Redoubt. The following text was taken word for word from the sign at the entrance. York Redoubt was the heart of defences protecting the outer harbour approaches to Halifax. Begun in 1793, it was enlarged by the Duke of Kent who constructed a Martello tower here in 1798. The redoubt became an essential link in the communications system protecting the city against attack. Its strategic importance was such that it was rebuilt in the 1860's and 1880's to mount more powerful guns. In the twentieth century York Redoubt became the tactical mommand centre for all harbour defences. It remained active untill 1956. These photos were taken standing beside the lookout tower (can just be seen a little on the left that thing sticking out is a iron shutter for the windows). I do have some pics of the actual fort that I will post in a bit. On the left you can see the actual little city of Halifax. If you were to drop us into New York you would have to remember where you put it or you would likely never find it again :-) POP 600,000 (approx). The actual city proper has 375,000 the rest is in urban areas. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halifax_Regional_Municipality I live in one of the urban outskirts, Spryfield.

OH if you check out the Wikipedia link above be sure to click on all the pics as 95% of them have much larger versions. The vare last on at the bottom of the page is a panaramic of the city proper, if you do check it out be sure to pay attention to the number of trees in the city. Then try to imagine that we lost about 20-30% of our trees in Hurricane Jaun, and these are how many we still have left. The place has tons of trees, I could not imagine living in a city that did not have a strong population of trees also.

I got a book on the explosion of an ammunition ship in WW-I in Halifax harbor to understand how the government dealings compared with those in the Port Chicago, Texas explosion during WW-II. The U.S. government has to agree to be sued in order for a court proceeding to occur. I never found out about that part regarding Canada. Looks peaceful, now.

Much of the restoration of Halifax was thanks to Boston and to a local company Shaw Brick. Boston was the first to come to our rescue, to this day we sill send them a Xmas tree for the city square in thank you. We had a NS Premier suggest we stop doing it due to expence and he darn near got lynched.

I went to the WIKI site. When I was in Maine,I was surprised at how many Irish were close by. I don't think we think of Irish and Scots to immigrate to Canada but they do. Interesting history.
