Description
Goodbye, sweetest person I ever knew.
I wonder how many of your steps
helped smoothing out those stones
during these ninety-two years.
That same church where my father used to play
where my parents met
where you went, luckily, not too often:
you were too smart for that.
You, the first person whom I seeked comfort
You, the first person to go to receive a smile
You, the first person to read my books
* before they were even thought to be published
You, the joy and light-heartedness of a whole family
You, the positive face, you the matter-of-factness
I will never thank you enough for all the times
you made me laugh
you made me think
you made me look at myself in a different way
you found just the right word at the right moment
For all the stories of past times
of the bombing of Milan
of the partisans you had the courage to hide
of a world that is no more.
This is what I want to remember:
your oh-so-smart look, your laugh,
your milanese dialect mixed to tuscan,
your steps on those stones
You always, undramatically, simply
being there.
