After reading riko's comment, decided to re-submit. Thanks for your input riko.
Just playing around on a Sunday afternoon...
I tried rendering this with all the 'toys' [GI, AO, Caustics etc] - took over 12 hours! And wasn't that good. Fiddled some more and got it down to 'just' 6 hrs - and thought that was quite enough!
So, anyway, how DO you make a convincing ice cube?

Ice cube? Maybe try this: Color: R: 200, G: 193, B: 242 Transparency: brightnes 77%, refraction 1.38, fresnel on 100% Reflection: 34% Specular: width: 50%, height: 20%, And remember melting icecubes get round corners. Nice render if I'd turn all toys on, my rendertime meets the end of time... :) I would though add some slight rounding on the borders of the ash tray and sigarettebox, they're sharp as a knife now.

Thanks for that Riko, will try it anon. Forgot to mention in description that Cigarettes and Ashtray are just 'props', didn't try at all with them, just there to fill it up.

The image looks great. I rendered an ice cube by itself melting on a surface no caustics but adjusting the cube with the magnet tool I could redistribute lite & ref. selective rendering several times to get it just right (as my patients allowed)I use 8.5
