Description

This beautiful abbey has a very chequered history and the site it stands on has been a place of worship for a thousand years. In 675 Osric, King of the Hwicce, granted the Abbess Berta 100 hides near Bath for the establishment of a convent. The religious house later became a monastery, under the patronage of the Bishop of Worcester. On the death of William the Conqueror in 1088, Bath was ravaged in the struggle for power between his sons, and the Abbey has gone from Cathedral status to Abbey. Fallen into disrepair and then rebuilt in 1539. The Abbey choirs were in practice when we visited, the Abbey Choirs are noted for being one of the finest church choirs in Britain not attached to a school. And it was a pleasure to hear them as we explored this building.. Here I show the nave, in its present state but the nave was originaly a roof of timber and lath construction. During the 1860s major restoration work was carried out by Sir George Gilbert Scott, funded by Rector Charles Kemble. This included replacing the timber roof of the nave with fan vaulting. Bishop King had arranged for the vaulting of the choir, to a design by William and Robert Vertue. There are clues in the stonework that King intended the vaulting to continue into the nave, but that this plan was abandoned, probably for reasons of cost. So Scott, in effect, completed the original design. Thanks for taking time to look and comment and my apologies for not being around much I have a problem with my shoulder, and prevents me spending much time on the PC or taking photographs, despite having had hydrocortizone injections..

Gorgeous shot! I did not get to see the abbey. We saw the Roman baths and that's all.

Know where you are with the shoulder, my right one is frozen again and I have severe pain in it, I am waiting to go back in hospital for more injections. I wish you a speedy recovery. Very interesting history, and it is good to go with the photo. Thanks for the info, and it's an awesome shot. Sorry about your shoulder. I've had those shots, and for me they didn't work for long, plus I understand they have awful side-effects. Now I take lots of vitamins, and the problem has dimished, so far. ;o) Wishing you well.
