Description
A hypothetical planet of the blue supergiant star Deneb. This world would be in an orbit equal in distance to that of our Neptune, yet the star’s intense heat is vaporizing silicate and metallic materials off the surface, creating a toxic, smoggy atmosphere. Water – or life could never exist here. The liquid you see would actually be molten soft metals, such as lead and barium that have leached from the ores and have formed lakes.
With a diameter nearly 300 times and a mass over 20 times that of our Sun, Deneb’s life will last only a few million more Earth years before it goes supernova. On Earth, it will punctuate the sky – both day and night with a point of unimaginable brilliance for a few days before rapidly and completely fading from view.
Well, there’s your science lesson for today – take a 10-minute break and then we’ll have a quiz.
Thanks for looking in!
