Description

Somehow, I have always felt persecuted by the ghost of Claire Zachanassian, the main female character from "The Visit",("Der Besuch der alten Dame" _literally, "The Visit of the Old Lady"), a theater play by Swiss playwriter Frederich Durrenmatt. I was very young when I saw this work and was shocked by its theme. It was labelled as "Theatre of Cruelty". For me, it´s possibly the most interesting story I´ve ever seen or heard of. Now, I want to share with you some images I´ve made, recreating aspects of the personality of this charismatic personage. You won´t see these images at the theater play or at the film version of it. Let´s say that my intention is not to illustrate the play, or segments of it, but to deepen into Mrs. Claire´s controversial psychology. Internet references to the play and the personage can be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Visit http://www.gajos.org/books/reviews/theVisit-page.shtml.en http://www.moveweb.com/Guidewrite/durrenmatt.html http://www.china.org.cn/english/culture/36113.htm The starting point for this image was the moment in which she _ then considered the richest woman of the world _ decides to return to her native town, which is now ruined, to make a monumental and wild proposal to its inhabitants. (As I said before, this particular moment is not included in the original play). Now, let´s have a few data to introduce the story: Claire turns out to be an eccentric old lady with a commanding disposition, several artificial body parts and a bizarre entourage. We find out that Claire left the town decades earlier wronged by her first sweetheart, Anton, currently a happily married shop keeper . Now, she has agreed to help the town with an enormous amount of one million pounds on one condition... if somebody kills Anton. Production Data. Mrs. Claire´s basic figure was made using the V4 Old Lady parameters; her makeup is one of the spectacular Venice shaders. Western attributes are from V4 Leather Western Set . I made her clothing as well as other clothing elements for the scene. Props: Her wheelchair is a free model by Guy Frog, a French artist. Screen and urn are part of the Kings Chamber set. Her jewelry is a V4_Ejewels set. Rest of props were made by me. Well, that´s all by now. I´ll post 3, maybe 4, images related to this character. Hope you like it, or at least, to be seduced to know a bit more of this monumental play.

Excellent theme! I hadn't heard of this play until tonight, and I look forward to seeing it sometime in the future! I'll have to find a playhouse that is performing it, or maybe suggest it to the local Opera House :D

I saw a stage presentation of it here a few years ago. An interesting study in moral corruption, especially when she reveals she was the one who ruined the town's economy, in order to make the town compliant to her later demand.

sorry, danilo, for this somewhat tardy comment...well, this is certainly a dark albeit very interesting theme...although she apparently has lots of mechanical parts, she is quite human in her emotion...especially in her desire to manipulate others' weaknesses for her own ends...really like how you carried the mechanical/computer circuit theme throughout the scene and the two reflective walls add nice depth to an already very interesting scene...not too certain i understand the bloodied screen and the two handlers...did she do something horrid behind that screen?

i think it's interesting everyone's take seems to be (from the links) that she corrupted the town. that says a lot, considering the wikipedia synopsis says that she was forced to prostitute herself because all someone had to do to pervert justice was bribe a couple of drunks. not to mention, this was how a man she loved treated her. he turned his back on his own child, reduced his child's mother to destitution and abject shame, and he was the favorite guy in town. and the town had no problem or hesitation in harming her. it sounds to me like she just made the town face its corruption, where previously only she had to bear the burden of their lack of basic morality. great picture. i love how you depicted the barely hidden violence. i like the determination in the eyes of the main figure. as always, interesting psychological use of mirrors. and the sterility of Claire's character. a small technical point: i think that chair is for racing. i'm not an expert or anything, but the angled thin wheels and low back look like the ones i've seen in sports events on tv (though without the 3rd wheel).

The focus of the play seems to be general fundamental moral issues, but the personal aspects, are even more intriguing. There is a strong contrast between her fierce and determined expression and pose and the subservient guys. It's interesting that her reflections on the screen depict different images/feelings- on her right the sword is even larger than the real one; on her left her post seems like she is ready to embrace someone, What does she really want to do...
