Description
This peaceful scene in Stirling was the site of bloodshed in 1297. When the mounted knights of John de Warrenes forces advanced onto the bank visible a trap was waiting to be sprung. He was the Kings champion ,tasked with putting down a Scottish rebellion led by William Wallace and Andrew Murray. Wisely Warrenes stayed safe on the South bank where I was stood, his force of over 5000 crossed a rickety wooden bridge upstream of this later stone bridge. The bridge and causeway was narrow, but the Scots spearman waited for the right moment and then attacked from 3 sides. For the English Kings army it went horribly wrong and Warrenes had the wooden bridge destroyed leaving his army to be slaughtered. Of course many Scots died as well and this included Andrew Murray.
Tough nasty times,so the legend of Braveheart started here, in the film Mel Gibson portrays a determined hero however history records that Wallace also had a dark side.
Wallace led his army South and as part of his total war he had over 450 villages burned down and the the occupants killed.

If you zoom the pic,and then go full screen, you will see the top of the Wallace memorial tower on the far side of the bridge just showing above the red tree.

Only after you have read the story, crossed this bridge, toward Stirling Castle - can you understand what happened here at the River Fourth. Different time and different bridge but you can feel the energy when you look back down from Stirling Castle. Fantastic capture. Dana P
