The return to Old Calladon was not without its moments. Their previous missions here had been terrifying, fruitful, enlightening, and painful. Nothing much had changed. But where they had cleared the Temple of Selvatarm before, and later found out that it had been little more than a front for Tarantella Belabra to draw the energy from their deaths so she might become the Avatar of Kiriansalee, now there was a different reason for the Drow renegades. They truly were worshippers of the new spider God of the Dark Elves.

But this one, she was something different. Vhaelik thought of the towering Drow that had led the patrol that had brought down the Gith Ambassador and his guard, who had captured him, turned him over to the Deurgar to torture and then deliver to the Illith. She had, in a way, brought about his introduction to the Silver Gryphon Legacy. On the other hand, she had died due to the efforts of Emma and the rest of the Silver Gryphon. But another had escaped. What had Opal called them? Yochlol.

"That's right. We are the Yochlol. We were there when your predecessors slew our Mistress. The Deathmaster wasn't the only one to draw from Her energy. So we were left leaderless, and for a time we were lost, wandering the rifts of the Abyss, fighting to protect ourselves rather than to expand our dominion. As the Succubi now fight for their species' very survival. But a new Master has called us, and we are His to command now. No longer are we the dispossessed. We have a new home, and a new God. We will not force any to follow in His path, for Selvatarm is a lone hunter,â?¦ and prey is always needed. We do not hate you for what your parents and grandparents did. But we are what we are. Spider venom runs in our veins, and it always will."

As the Drow renegades and the Driders moved in around them and descended from the ceiling where they had hidden within deep, blue-black shadows, Opal suddenly remembered why she hated spiders.
