Description

Daily life on a rainy, misty monsoon day along the Han River in Da Nang, Viet Nam. This picture was originally taken as a dia in January 1967, from which a print was made. The 34 year old print was scanned. It looks a little washed out, but it actually looked just like this during a break from a heavy downpour. This picture has always been one of my favorites. Unfortunately, most people don't agree with me. I don't know if this is because of the washed-out look of the photo, i.e. lacking color, or their opinion about the war that was raging there. I spent 8 months there (241 days exactly)during 1966-67. It was my introduction to Asia - and photography- and I have loved both ever since. The reason I like this picture so much is that it truly shows life as it went on during this period of time. The heavy, moist, tropical air didn't allow for much color on that day. This picture was taken during a lull of heavier rain squalls, and all these women were doing during this lull in the rain was chopping some wood for their cooking fire. Thanks for looking at this picture, and more thanks for commenting. Have a nice Sunday-whats left of it.

Yes, Asia is definitely woman-powered. This is a beautiful image, and while I was not stationed in Nam during the war, I was lucky to spend two years in neighboring Thailand in support of the war, and did not visit Vietnam until 1996. I spent a couple of months there, including Da Nang, and also did a week's worth of a side trip to Cambodia. Going back to Asia next year to revisit some places I've been and to ultimately see parts of China gearing up for the Olympics. I think this is a classic and timeless image, and in spite of all the modernization there, a lot of people still life just like this.

As a Viet Nam Vet 71-72 I love this picture. You are so right in that they actually lived that way and regardless of your feelings for that war the people there lived a hard life in many respects.
