Description

Nikon 7900 image. This is a small spider. He would fit on my little fingernail with room to spare. That seems to be about as big as they get. I see dozens of them every time I take a walk to the mailbox. Usually their bodies are white with black "spines", but on two occasions I have found one colored like this one. I have also seen photos that show white bodies with red "spines" but so far, I have not seen one of those. I think the different colors are just variations of the same species. They make rather large webs for such little spiders. Some of these triangular shaped webs can be 3 foot across and have 3 anchor strands that span 20 foot. They are very elaborate and have a unique shape as well as a distinctive pattern of thicker areas that are spaced every few inches along normal size strands. This makes them quite obvious. They look like dashed lines hanging in the air. That is a good thing, lol. As I walk through semi-open woodland areas of my property, I manage to avoid walking though countless webs because I can see them. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

Gracious! It has the backside of a spider, and the front half of a beetle! LOL! This is the first time I've even seen a photo of such a creature, and it's fascinating! Nice work!

I'm sure there is a reason why this spider has developed its districtive shell, spikes and coloring. I would love to know why it has develop these things. Another great shot. Full size is a must!
