Description

Tombstone Nugget Newspaper article October 28, 1881 AN IMPOSING FUNERAL. The burial of the D.ead Cowboys- An Immence Procession, Etc. "While it was not entirely expected, the funeral of Billy Clanton and Thomas and Frank McLowery, yesterday, was the largest ever witnessed in Tombstone. It was advertised to take place at 3 o'clock, but it was about 4 o'clock before the cortege moved, yet a large number had gathered at the undertaker's long before the first time mentioned. The bodies of the three men, neatly and tastefully dressed, were placed in handsome c.askets with heavy silver trimmings. Upon each was a silver plate bearing the name, age, birthplace and date of the death of each. A short time before the funeral, photographs were taken of the dead. The procession was headed by the Tombstone brass band playing the solemn and touching march of the dead. The first wagon contained the body of Billy Clanton, followed by those of THE MCLOWRY BOYS. A few carriages came next in which were friends and relatives of the deceased, among whom were Ike and Finn Clanton. After these were about three hundred persons on foot, twenty-two carriages and buggies and one four horse stage, and the horsemen, making a line nearly two blocks in length. The two brothers were buried in one grave, and the young Clanton close by those who were his friends in life and companions in death. The inscription upon the plates of the c.aske-s stated that Thomas McLowry was 25 years of age, Frank McLowry 29 years of age, both natives of Mississippi, and that William H. Clanton was 19 years of age and a native of Texas. "Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep." ************* I've done a bit of research, and there are some differences on that infamous day when Billy Clanton, Frank and Tom McLaury were killed/murdered. I guess it depends on who is telling the history. I'll include a couple of links if you are interested enough to read them. http://clantongang.com/oldwest/billy_history.html http://www.tombstone1880.com/archives/wyatt.htm http://clantongang.com/oldwest/gunfight.html Happy reading. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my previous upload, "~Clanton/McLaury~2~". I really appreciate your time. Next I will be posting a few more pictures from Boothill. Have a Great Day!

Different angle and perspective, but also a great shot. The cactus and vegetation give a great mood to image...

Nice shot. Yes, the stories of the old west and the bad guys/good guys are varied. The stories were passed word of mouth and got bigger and bolder with each telling until finally, someone wrote it down and made some money on the tale. Very good information with this fabulous shot.

A very good background information to a very good picture. The men seem not to be forgotten, although killed more than 125 years ago. This difference between "killed" and "murdered" is impressive. Very good shot. Thanks for sharing.

With such an elaborate funeral, I never realized the Clanton's and their ilk were held in such high esteem in Tombstone. After watching the adventures of Wyatt Earp in movies and on television over the years, I was under the impression they were no-good varmints. In any case, a great POV, and fine clarity, textures and lighting in this momentous photograph, young lady.
