Description
This is from the same morning as the "Sunrise over Madre De Dios" shot a few shots back in the gallery. There was a dugout canoe that they all use in the amazon on the rocks of the shoreline where i was taking pictures so i decided on a composition with it in. The "dugout" bit is invisible in this shot, but basically the base of the canoe is made from one tree trunk and then the rest of it is built up from it into more of a boat as we know them.
I got first hand experience as to why they still use the technique... we were only about 5 minutes into our first boat ride and we ran aground on one of the mini weirs you have to navigate through (the river speeds up down a gradient and you have to maneuver into the "channel" where all of the fast flowing water is - and we missed it by about a foot). If it was made with planks of wood and subjected to the same treatment, i doubt the boat would last long. And judjing from the way the navigator and pilot dealt with the situation it seems a frequent occurence. I was there in the dry season, hence the title.
Hope you like it, bit of a change in presentation, but it fit the shot crop. (with a wink to kai ;P)
Enjoy!
Rich
