Description

Welcome to the author's note for The Vampire Hunter Chronicles. If you haven't been reading along the first part can be found here. I don't normally do author's notes, but I figured that somebody may be intersted in what I thought. So I guess that there's no harm. The Vampire Hunter Chronicles Author’s Note: Reflections Every book is like a journey, so full of fanfare and expectations at the beginning. But like a journey, it’s not the end that matters it’s the experiences gathered along the path. There were several firsts for me on this particular journey. Probably the most noticeable to me was the viewpoint of the story. As an author, this was the first book that I’ve written entirely in the first person. I’m normally more of an omnipotent third person viewer, getting inside the heads of all of my characters. By constraining my viewpoint to only one character I found that many things were more difficult to write in, and others were easier. It was definitely a different feeling for me. The second thing that was different was the accompanying images. Before I have always done the artwork for a piece after the writing is complete, using the complete work as the inspiration for the art. While I can’t determine an exact amount, I know that there was more than one occasion that the art would have a particular detail that I liked enough to work into the writing. It was always completely unexpected, and I actually liked being able to build on such small details. This was the first time that I've tried the particular mix of genres that led to this piece. I even had writerly friends give me funny looks when I told them that I was placing vampires in dystopia. But despite the odd mix, I feel that it works. Despite the fact that I have blogged or otherwise posted novels in progress, this was also the first that I’ve had such consistent feedback and comments. I found myself looking forward to the comments after every post, wondering what you all would have to say. It was a wonderful experience. As this journey comes to a close, I find myself with familiar feelings. Like dancers in a crowded hall, I find the mixed emotions of satisfaction, emptiness and fear all vying for floor space. Knowing that the book has been written, and that I’m happy with the results, gives me great satisfaction. But the fear of people not enjoying the words, and the emptiness left behind after the words have been written cannot be ignored. Once a piece has been shown, it cannot be taken back. The great thing about storytelling, however, is that the next journey is always just around the corner. Thank you for sharing this journey with me.
