When you have such dramatic light situations as here and where most of the subject matter is in the shadow, I would recomend using your flash but in a way were it is balanced with the daylight. This is called sun-sync as well as fill-light. Just remember that the flash is to be less than the actual sunlight so that it still looks realistic. egmont has a point with the fill flash, but it might loose its "blacksmith" edge if it didnt have such a huge contrast, if you get what i mean ;) Nice one.
