Description
Force Crag Mine sits in a spectacular location at the head of the remote Coledale Valley, 7kms west of Keswick, and the remains are scattered over an area of 75 hectares (185 acres). The site was mined for lead from 1839 until 1865, and for zinc and barytes from 1867, until its final abandonment in 1991; making it the last working metal mine in the Lake District.
The towering crag that provides the spectacular backdrop to the mine inevitably made it difficult to transport the ore from the levels on the valley sides to the mills on the valley floor where the ore was crushed and washed. The problem was solved by different ingenious means at different dates, reflecting improvements in technology. There are traces of tracks, tramways, a channel for slushing the ore (moving it by the force of water) and an aerial ropeway, which worked like a ski-lift. Below ground, a vast inclined tunnel was dug to link the upper & lower workings.
The mine buildings are unfortunately now condemned although there are outline plans to turn into a tourist attraction. Speaking personally I hope they leave it alone; dark, forbidding and dangerous!
Thanks for looking,
~Steve~

Good story of a struggle to win against nature. The backdrop to the building is rather impressive and your post work as usual brings up the colours. Looking forward to more from this location.

I sure recognize mine shacks when I see them. We have so many in the southwest and they have all gone to rack and ruin but I like that these places are going back to nature and trying to erase the scars made while they were active mines. Lovely shot and the information is wonderful. It makes me appreciate the mountain for more than just a backdrop.

Yes I could not agree with you more these old places in such scenes are hard to come by, and another great landscape.. Bravo Steve

Hi Steve. Great capture here. It reminds me of the old west here. But of course, the ladcsape is so very different. I love the atmosphere you've captured...it's soooo rugged and charming...with a hint of eerieness. Excellent done, my friend. Hope you got more of this cool-looking place! -M :^)

Wonderful shot, and the classic beauty/style of your images... agree that it would be a shame to destroy this impressive place.

Most excellent work here! I really like the perspective in this as it leads the viewer up to the mine itself. Interesting narrative too...a lot of history in such old buildings.... A bit of HDR in this as well?
