Description
Elk Mountain Pass on Interstate 80 in Wyoming at Wagon Hound Road. As a story goes, the native inhabitants counseled against building the interstate over the top of Elk Mountain, due to the extreme winds and winter conditions. First Lady, "Lady Bird" Johnson wanted it to go right over the top so we could "enjoy" the scenery. I've personally observed as the wind blew a 40-ton vehicle off the highway into the ditch. One winter, I took a friend "over the top" during a blizzard. The wrecks we observed were more than she could handle. I won't take a passenger with me, now.

WOW David! This is an awesome shot. I have never been over that part of Interstate 80, but I will try to remember not to do it in the wintertime! I love the information that you give with your posts. Great job!

Great shot. Been there in the past. I can see why a wind farm is there taking advantage of the high winds. Thanks for the info, too. I didn't know Lady Bird was responsible for this highway project.

The terrain in the shot looks similar to the Altamont Pass area going from the Bay Area into the central vally..It's gets quite windy also and has a LOT of wind turbines..will for sure stay away from Wymoning in the winter..:)
