I will dare to bore you a little with a few of my 2006 travel pictures. Because of the political situation and it's proximity to and involvement with the conflict in neighboring Iraq, few Westerners visit Syria. The Syrian people are relatively modern in attitude, similar to the Turks, very hospitable and friendly. They're curious about us, and according to many, I chatted with, generally not overly positive about their own police state and leadership, and wish for more freedom and international trade interaction, but like so many living in Middle Eastern dictatorships, are afraid to speak out openly. However, many expressed hope that young Assad will be the man to finally shake off the yoke of the old guard and bring change to the nation. I find it a fascinating place to visit and would love to do so again someday. Top: Crak De Chavaliers. The largest and probably best preserved Crusader fortress anywhere. At its peak it held a garrison of 2000 and was never sacked. Second: The oasis of Palmyra: The Temple of Baal's outer perimeter of columns. Once a wealthy trading center and caravan cross road. Third: The kilometer-long, unrivaled column and temple-lined road of Afamya. Bottom: Ancient Palmyra's, already in Babylonian times known as Tadmor, extensive ruins of the once great trading center. No need to comment on these travel shots. Just enjoy them (or not, as the case may be). :D
