Description

A morale-building, low-altitude fly-by in Wake Island. The aicraft is coming out of the lagoon and as it is approaching the bridge that connects Peale (right) with Wake Island it is traveling at 285kts and accelerating. It flew at about 90-ft. above sea level. Wake is about 1600 miles west of Hawaii. This picture was taken in March 1990 and later scanned. To clarify this photo. There were actually three fly-bys that day until the local commander got nervous about this. Unfortunately for him, most of our pilots outranked him. But flying this low is not allowed anywhere in the civilized world. But we were a long way away from civilization. I was on that little bridge during an earlier fly-by, but when the plane actually approached, I held my ears and ducked. It was noisy, since it had full power on and was accelerating, and it was low, and it was BIG. After all, the aircraft at the approach was only about 90-ft. above sea level, the bridge is 12-ft. high, and my eyes at least another 5-ft above the bridge. It was just a little too close for comfort. Thanks for the kind comments.

To say "nice picture" is a little bit understatement, it seems.... I don`t want to stay at this bridge, even when the point of view is so magnificent.... Wonderful catch, Sig..

Is this a photoshop Picture? No pilot would risk their flying career to make a fly-by like this!!!!
