Description

Arbutus Arbutus menziesii A broadleaf evergreen tree, up to 30 metres tall, usually with a crooked or leaning trunk that divides into several twisting upright branches and an irregularly rounded crown. The Arbutus tree grows in two places, an island in the Southern Hemisphere and on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. This tree sheds its bark rather than its leaves. It grows, like the Giant Sequoia in sandy, rocky soil. When it takes root it is there to stay. I always enjoy seeing the larger curled pieces of bark on the beach, looking so much like a rolled papyrus that I would never be surprised to find hieroglyphics written there. I believe I have also seen this lovely tree growing in Washington State and called Madrone there.

Lovely distinct colors and textures in this capture of this regal sturdy tree, Marie! The multifaceted bark alone is fantastic in itself. Extremely well done!

Beautiful image! We do have them here, but they're called madronas. Down south (California way) they call 'em madrones. An odd distinction, but there you have it. They probably aren't the exact same species as yours, but close enough. I would never have guessed that you live in a tree, my friend! Well well. You learn something new every day! :)

Nice picture, we have a tree like this in Texas, but our version will not grow this far north, Dallas I mean. It is found in central Texas west to southeastern New Mexico and south to Mexico and Guatemala. I would love to grow one, the colors are great, much like your picture. Todd

Nice shot. We have many of these beautiful trees growing on our property here in southern Oregon - they're called madrones here...
