Here you go mate, you said all we need to do is come up with a way of using Context Free images in 3D apps.
Well, this is what I've come up with so far!! I even converted your Starfish (see here for original CF image) http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1541118
Images to 3D obj files done using Bryce 6.1 lattice editor
Backdrop - several fractal images projected onto a cloud plane in a bryce scene
objects imported into DAZ/Studio, custom textured and lit with several distant lights, spotlights and point lights.
Resulting image then "Gimped" using Virtual photographer filter "Ambient"
And that's that!!!!! (Why use one App when you can have so much fun with four!!!!!)
