I have always liked 'llIustration' and tend to produce it either as Cover Art or Sequential imagery. The former is probably the more challenging because of the balance that needs to be struck between form and content, decoration and narrative. Cover Art, like the short story, gets a limited shot at indicating what lies beneath the cover. My current preoccupation has been described, and I think aptly, as 'nostalgic sci fi and pulp'. And someone also suggested that it might be a little too late to revive the 'adventure genre'.
Stylistically, I'm keen on the commercial illustration of the mid 20th Century that was made to promote 'mass' publication (especially children's annuals, pulp magazines and comics). There is so much creativity and artistic competence to found on the covers and within the pages of even the most mundane examples.
It is over the last 7 years that I have started to use, and like, digital media. My working methods are still a little too intuitive and involve the usual squinting and standing back that one associates with traditional media, but I am enjoying making imagery more than ever and would now like to explore the possibilities of illustrating written stories (preferably by working with an author).
Interests: Commercial illustration and sequential imagery of the mid 20th Century that was made to promote 'mass' publications (especially children's annuals, pulp magazines and comics).

Yup, all details in place in your usual perfection but with some very tasty texturing for the cave wall. Nice job on knocking down the details on the hair as well. The girls pose is somewhat lackluster which, as I'm sure you know, makes it look more authentic. There's a dilemna: do you continue to re-create what might look more authentic or go for more dynamic posing that might put it a decade or two later. Regardless, it's another great cover.

Wow - Brilliant render. Everything is spot on - the typeface used, the character & hair, colour palette etc. Well done.

Mike: More great work from the cover master himself! I love the theme and the timing: the woman in peril is perfect for Halloween. And the title is a great pun on the old “Thrilling Mystery” mag. The hair and expression are GREAT! Dead-on recreations of the 1940s. However, I worry that the impact is diminished because the color of her skirt because it blends in too much with that awesome cave wall texture. The only real problem I have with the issue is that I’m unclear as to what she’s looking at. I keep thinking that she should be looking at us, so we can better see the look of horror on her face, and have the men’s shadows falling across her and then on to the back wall. Right now it looks like the men are coming from our direction, yet she’s looking off to our left, and that puzzles me. It’s probably just me, but the lighting and wall just don’t seem to line up to enhance the sense of menace that you’re trying to convey. And I also have to agree with deci6el about the pose. I keep thinking it would heighten the sense of peril if her arm were raised to her bosom. But enough of my nitpicking (you know how I get!), I think this is very well done and your “aged paper” is probably at its best! I love that long crease down the front. Excellent work!
