Description
I find fish skulls to be fascinating objects. Unlike mammals, fish have dozens of bones in their skulls. Fish also have amazing teeth. In addition to teeth on their jaws, some also have sets of teeth on the roof of their mouth and in their throats.
This is the skull of the Spotted Wolf Fish, Anarhichas minor. Note the teeth on the front of the mouth for grabbing prey and teeth inside for crushing prey. These fish live in deeper waters in North Atlantic and eat sea urchins, starfish, crabs, lobsters and other fish.
I took this photo at the Woods Hole Science Aquarium, in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. I'll post a photo of a living Wolf Fish next.
