Description

Approaching Menara International Airport (Marrakech)... "The olive tree is certainly the richest gift of heaven." Thomas Jefferson Morocco is a traditional producer of olives. Morocco has seen a steady increase in olive exports and the country maintains an active program to increase olive production by promoting olive tree planting. While this increase has seen Morocco become one of the world's largest olive exporters, Morocco recently moved ahead of Greece as the world's second largest exporter of olives, it has also drawn the ire of some regarding the environmental implications of such growth. Growth in olive production have brought about ecological concerns stemming from Morocco's potential for desertification and increased pollution linked to olive processing plants. Around Marrakech, production plants involved with canning and olive oil production have caused serious atmospheric pollution... A wonderful capture dear Michel. The earth looks so parched. The pollution problem is a big worry for us all. Hugs, kisses bisous. DiDi.

I will NOT mention Greece or Morocco to our little town of Corning who has the big billboard up on the interstate claiming to the the Capitol of Olives. :-) for a tiny town, they have awfully big dreams. Anyway, This is a mammoth olive grove operation. That is incredible. And you really got a nice clear and clean shot from the plane and that is not easy to do.

An interesting perspective. The pattern looks like the orange groves in Arizona. Where is the water coming from? Is it groundwater or surface water? If surface water, is it coming out of the Atlas Mtn. Range and stored in reservoirs? What is the delivery system, lined ditches, unlined ditches, pipes? Is each tree being separately irrigated? What is the annual consumtive water use of an olive tree? What is the annual average precipitation in the region? In Arizona olive trees used to be planted as ornamentals. This is no longer allowed because of the pollen they create. I enjoy your pictures and write-ups!!!
