Description

Mount Charleston is the highest mountain of the Spring Mountains of southern Nevada, approximately 35 miles northwest of Las Vegas. It is Nevada's eighth highest mountain peak[2], and is part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, as well as the Mount Charleston Wilderness Area and the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area. Well separated from higher peaks by large, low basins, it is the most topographically prominent peak in Nevada, and the eighth most prominent peak in the contiguous United States. Mount Charleston is a year-round getaway for Las Vegas' residents and visitors, with a number of hiking trails and a modest ski area. The mountain, which is snowcapped more than half the year, can be seen from parts of the Las Vegas Strip when looking toward the west. Mount Charleston has nearly 200 camp sites and over 150 picnic areas, some of which are RV accessible http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Charleston it was 27 degrees F up at the ski area when I drove up early last week one morning and the wind was blowing so the wind chill was in the teens and me with only a light jacket thanks for viewing and any comments. the very orange sky was partly due to the fires in Ca. on my trip home to Dallas, I could see smoke the whole trip.

Just makes you realise the devastation from all those fires in California Richard. My heart goes out to everyone, rich, or poor. It must be so hard for so many. Excellent capture Sir :o)

Awesome photo-the other morning ther was a full moon and in the west was the moon and the east was the sun but through all the smoke they looked almost the same. It was a little eerie.

Excellent image and information Richard, I appreciate it when folks give info especially when I don't know the area, so thank you kind sir for that. I like the way you have the lone aircraft in the centre of this vastness. It makes you stop and think, just how tiny we are in the scheme of things. Bravo!!!!!

Richard, this is really an amazing shot. The layers of soft color are fabulous and really warm the heart. I think I might have cropped about to where the plane is since it looks so great without the plane and that way the mountains with color to match the sky would be the only focus.
