Description

This is one from a couple of the months ago. As I was shooting the dragonflies I was moving about quite a bit and I didn't immediately realise that I'd taken a few shots directly into the sun. I expected them to be rubbish but was pleasantly surprised. I know this one isn't perfect, the dragonfly is ever-so-slightly out of focus, but I like it. :) Thanks for taking a look. :) - Andy -

Really a wonderful shot, 5+! You can increase noticeably the dragonfly's sharpness by the sharpening process that I will describe here in Photoshop (version 6 and later ones till CS3): — Turn the image mode into Lab mode by the menu Image > Mode > Lab colors. — Go to the Channels palette and click on the eye of the sole Channel L (Lightness). — Use the Sharpen Filter through the menu Filter > Sharpen (or Sharpen more), alternatively you can use the Sharpen Tool with gives only local results. Do not Sharpen too much otherwise you destroy the tonal quality of the image and a kind of ugly bright halo around the sharpened areas will result. — DO NOT FORGET to return to the RGB mode!!! (by passing through the Lab mode you can only sharpen the density levels i.e. the L Channel, and not alter the colors). Otherwise you cannot save the image except in Psd format. — Do not save the original Jpg file, BUT make "Save as" and give another name to the file, i.e. "Dragonfly_M.jpg" (dragonfly modified); so you can always return to the unmodified image if necessary. Have a nice week, Edouard
