Description
Something of an experiment, really. I try to stretch myself. It all started with a photo of the cafe and the sign and the weird POV. Just as it shows here. I became obsessed with it. I also had a photo of the slightly odd building in the back and the building on the side. I wanted to combine all those into one scene with this odd almost aerial point of view. I spent several days modeling the building in the back, most of which you don't see here. It was strange, though. Built up against a wall, it looks like one room wide, a few long and three high. Just past the end of the stairs, there's an archway, which the street goes through. It's an odd but nice house, likely somewhere in Italy.
This is a little opposite for me. I'm used to the backgrounds being dark and getting lighter as you move to the foreground. I've not done a dark foreground before. I tend to depend a lot on traditional art techniques I learned, oh, many many years ago. But I don't like to be stuck in a box. If you never do anything differently, you never learn.
The lighting was quite difficult to figure out, because this is forced perspective, so I couldn't have shadows from the front buildings infringe on the back building, and it had to match, at least vaguely, the sky. Tinted just a little, to add warmth. I had to get some outside help on this one, as far as critiques of the lighting and all. Why the rolling papers on the ledge? I haven't a clue. I just had this feeling that I had to put them there.
Textures are all made by me. I'm not entirely satisfied with them. I'm getting quite picky about my textures. Possibly being half blind does that to one.
