Description

A passenger awaits a northbound streetcar on the TTC's King Line (Route 504) in a part of the old City of Toronto called Roncesvalles Village. If you have the time and it's not rush hour, a trip on the King Line is a great way to tour a wide swath of Toronto. The streetcar travels from Broadview subway station on Danforth Avenue in the east end of the old city, south along Broadview Avenue (see TTC PCC 4500 On Broadview Avenue for a picture from this area) to Queen Street. There the line curves in front of a strip club (ok, some areas are better than others) turning westbound heading towards the city's core. Crossing the Don River, Route 504 branches onto King Street and then travels past the shops of the Distillery District, the banks of Financial District, the theaters of the Entertainment District and the homes of Rosedale. Past Rosedale, King Street converges with Queen Street again (see TTC CLRV 4180 On The Queensway for a photo of this area) and the King Line curves northbound onto Roncesvalles Avenue. Through Roncesvalles Village, the line continues north to Bloor Street and the Dundas West subway station. Roncesvalles Village is a part of Toronto to which I do not venture often, which is a shame. But I did get there a few weeks ago to capture some lovely autumn colours. This is a very picturesque district of the old city a few blocks to the east of High Park. Much like the Beaches District, Roncesvalles happens to be an old hamlet that was absorbed into the City of Toronto in the 19th Century. But it still retains the small business strip characteristic of such villages. Today the area is the home to a respectable Polish community and their delis, a great independent cinema called the Revue Cinema and a lot of very sociable cats. Believe it or not, cats in Toronto are known to hitch free rides on the streetcars. TTC: Toronto Transit Commission CLRV: Canadian Light Rail Vehicle

I've probably been all around that area, though being from the suburbs I just called it "downtown"! And yes, I have yet to find something better than a good Eastern European deli (I can almost taste a fresh rye bread sandwich now...).

Just scanning through a few galleries and saw the thumb on this, I knew it was a tram right away, I don't know how I missed it when you first posted it. Excellent capture and a superb narrative, I love it when somebody does a bit of homework and passes it on, it doubles the value of the image in my estimation. Thanks for sharing this one. Bravo!!!!!5+++++
