Description

Opodiphthera eucalypti or the Emperor Gum Moth is a native Australian moth. The reason I say 'poor' is because I just found out that the reason they only live a couple of weeks is because they do not have any mouth parts :( so basically and inevitably they starve to death after laying their eggs.... This is a photo taken on my nokia :) not great but I wanted to share this beautiful girl and her story. My son Ben brought the coccoon home and I told him he is not to bring them home when they have not emerged yet - he placed the coccoon in my wall unit and forgot about it. Then... Yesterday (a couple of years have passed since he brought it home) it had emerged and was drying it's wings on my sons school bag when we found it. Very gently I placed her outside where at least she would have a chance of mating... I was careful to put her in a safe place where the birds would not eat her but at some point she did mate. I searched for information and found out that she has no hope anyway due to no mouth parts :( My 12 year old son Ben took the photo. Thanks for taking the time to have a look :)
