Description
...the shot I was waiting for the other day. It seems to have a parasite or speck of something near its eye, which I considered cloning out, but then decided to post instead in its natural state. Cropped because of the long distance, so it seemed better suited as a triptych.
The belted kingfisher is a large and impressive bird. It is about 13" long with a wingspan of over 20". Its large size and unusually large head make it unmistakable when seen in the wild this way. It is one of the few North American birds where the female is actually more colorful than the male. The male is only blue-gray and white. The chestnut coloring on this kingfisher shows that this is a female kingfisher.
