A commander takes a last look from a stripped out control room, before leaving the base for good. This image kind of just appeared from bits - hope you like.

Despite the potential "bright" tones this image might have given the excellent sunshine streaming into the room, I find this image to have a wistful almost melancholy feel. It could be viewed that the exodus comes from having completed whatever objective initially saw the creation of the base. For me though, it evokes feelings of a task left not allowed to finish. Excellent work.

AS soon as I saw the title and teh image, the whole history just came to me without even needing to read your description. I love when a picture does that to me: you can feel and imagine what the characters in it are feeling without the need of words. As far as I am concerned, this picture reflects exactly the title. Congrats!
